Historically, the Wellington District extends from Cook Strait in the south to include Gisborne and Wanganui in the north. Artillery in Wellington originated with the Wellington Artillery Volunteers, the Napier Horse Artillery and the Wellington Naval Brigade, encompassing both coastal defence and inland units. It developed along this dual pathway to become the NZ Garrison Artillery Volunteer Regiment and the Wellington Field Artillery in 1911. By 1937, artillery in the region was centred at Wellington (the capital city) and inland at Palmerston North, armed with 18 pounders, 4.5" Howitzers, 6" Howitzers, anti-aircraft guns and a searchlight company.
